Va ser ordenat sacerdot anglic\u00e0 en 1825 en Oxford, i durant els anys seg\u00fcents va ser un dels principals impulsors del Moviment d&#8217;Oxford. En 1842 es va retirar a Santa Maria en Littlemore, on va viure sota condicions mon\u00e0stiques de gran austeritat. Mentre, escrivia el seu Assaig sobre el desenvolupament de la doctrina cristiana, la qual cosa el va reconciliar amb el credo i la pr\u00e0ctica de l&#8217;Esgl\u00e9sia Cat\u00f2lica Romana. En 1845 es va convertir al catolicisme i va ser ordenat sacerdot cat\u00f2lic en 1847. Als 78 anys d&#8217;edat, en 1879, va ser nomenat cardenal pel papa Le\u00f3n XIII.
